August Is National Make a Will Month
August is National Make-a-Will Month, and though LKM is not a Trusts & Estates or Probate firm, we do strongly believe everyone should have their estate plan in order. We especially encourage our clients to take this important step as they address other important issues related to the terms of the final judgment in their divorce and parenting plan.
We have created a checklist of important steps clients must take when a divorce is complete. Those items often include severing the financial and real property ties they may still have with their spouse and making appropriate changes to those ties that must remain in place in order to satisfy the terms of their separation orders, such as maintaining life insurance to accommodate child support or an alimony provision. We also advise them to update their will and other estate documents, as well as the beneficiaries on their insurance and retirement policies, under the guidance of an experienced trusts & estates attorney. Creating a will and estate plan allows them to communicate important financial and healthcare decisions, so they re prepared for whatever the future may hold. We keep a list of trusted referrals for just this purpose.
